Multicultural Literature and Composition

This year, your child will be participating in a research-based Language Arts program from the
College Board called SpringBoard®-English: Textual Power. SpringBoard offers engaging and
relevant lessons that teach students proven learning strategies that emphasize higher-order
thinking skills that challenge them to aim higher and achieve more. Students enrolled in
Multicultural Literature and Composition will receive an in-depth study of various literary
genres, while composing essays, narratives, poems, and technical documents. Students will be
involved in writing workshops where grammar will be studied within their own writing and
through mini lessons. Students will develop a writing portfolio to showcase their best work
and their growth as a writer throughout the year. By the end of the year, students will be able
to write organized, focused texts that convey a well defined perspective or tightly reasoned
argument. Class discussions, journal entries, assigned reading, and writing assignments will be
key components of this course. Vocabulary will also be studied within each unit of the course.
Students will be following the Georgia Standard s of Excellence, and the main implementation
tool used for instruction will be the consumable SpringBoard textbook. Recommended novels
and dramatic texts will also be used during this course while students prepare rigorously for
Formative Assessments, Summative Assessments, and Embedded Assessments.
